Meet the Doctors

  • Jennifer L. Johnson, DC

Dr. Jennifer Johnson, a second-generation chiropractor, was born in Lewiston, Maine and graduated from Lewiston High School with honors. Dr. Johnson began her undergraduate education at the University of Maine in Orono, concentrating on Biology and Zoology and finished at Cayuga College in Auburn, New York. From there she entered New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, New York, one of the first chiropractic colleges in the nation. She graduated cum laude in 2001 with her Doctorate of Chiropractic.

Dr. Johnson always knew she wanted to return to Maine to practice, and with this in mind, began an externship with Gardiner Family Chiropractic prior to her graduation from NYCC. She fully enjoyed the atmosphere, the patients, the staff, and the doctors, and was thrilled to be offered a position at the office. Dr. Johnson enjoys all facets of chiropractic, but her primary interest lies in helping children and pregnant women.

Dr. Johnson is also lucky to have a very supportive family. She is the proud mother of beautiful twins, a daughter, Riley, and a son, Garrett, born in 2003 and she lives in Central Maine with her partner, Phil. Dr. Johnson and her family enjoy traveling and plan to do much more of that in the future.

Dr. Johnson recently completed her certification in Functional Medicine through the Functional Medicine Academy and is eager to continue to help her community through this new aspect of her practice.

She is a member of the Maine Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association, the International Chiropractor’s Association, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and the Holistic Pediatric Association.

  • Richard W. Knipping, DC

Dr. Rich Knipping is an excellent chiropractor with over 20 years experience working with patients of all types and ages. He is from Winterport, Maine, and went to college in Massachusetts before going to New York Chiropractic College in upstate New York.

Dr. Rich has been an athlete virtually his whole life and is passionate about the human body being able to operate at its best. Chiropractic is a vital part of that, he points out, and so is fitness and nutrition. He is expert in all three areas. Dr. Rich is proficient in multiple adjusting techniques, ART (Active Resistive Technique), and NIMMO trigger point release work. He works with Kinesiotape as well. And he is a genuinely nice guy

When he’s not in the office he’s often at a gym. He is a competitive CrossFit athlete and coach, and a USA Weightlifting Performance Coach. He travels from Alaska to Newfoundland to participate in multi-day snowmobile adventure racing and is the 2010 champion of Cain’s Quest in Labrador. He enjoys hiking, fishing, mountain biking and skiing as well. In his earlier days, he played baseball, football, and rugby.

His experience in sports has taught him the importance of never giving up. He brings that mantra to patient care, too, and is committed to doing whatever is needed to help each patient gain optimum results. He loves working with seniors and families and everyone in between.

Dr. Rich lives in central Maine with his wife Vanessa, who is also a competitive athlete, and two daughters

  • Karen A. Grimshaw, DC

Dr. Karen Grimshaw was born and raised in western Kansas. She was involved in a variety of sports throughout school, excelling in basketball and tennis. She continued her athletic and academic endeavors at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornell with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

During her final year of college, Dr. Grimshaw began experiencing headaches that did not respond to traditional treatment. She was referred to a chiropractor where she experienced complete resolution of her headaches. Inspired by the profession's holistic focus on wellness and prevention, and impressed by her own experience with chiropractic, Dr. Grimshaw attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Missouri, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and Salutatorian of her class. She has been practicing with Gardiner Family Chiropractic since November 2006.

Dr. Grimshaw has a special interest in fitness, rehabilitation, and strength training, and she has been trained as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has also undergone training in the Kinesio Taping Method through the Kinesio Taping Association. She is also very passionate about the healing power of food and believes that proper nutrition is truly nature's medicine.

Dr. Grimshaw and her husband, Scott, enjoy the outdoors and particularly like to hike. She is passionate about music and loves to travel any chance she gets. She feels fortunate and honored to care for the people of her community.

Dr. Grimshaw is a member of the Maine Chiropractic Association.

  • David J. Metcalf, DC

Dr. David Metcalf got his B.A. in English from Ripon College in Wisconsin in 1992 and began practicing chiropractic in Kansas in 1998 after graduating from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minnesota. He practiced in Texas before coming to Maine and has been living in Augusta since the end of 2014, having moved to the area with his family of three (now adult) daughters and his beautiful wife, Jessica. Dr. Metcalf and his wife are proud cat parents to Moto and Tiki.

Dr. Metcalf has spent his career as a chiropractor focused on understanding the dynamics of soft-tissue injuries and how that knowledge applies to getting his patients better more efficiently. He has significant experience with ART (Active Release Technique), MFR (Myofascial Release), Tissue Blading/Scraping (Graston) and Kinesio Taping, as well as a host of other rehabilitation and exercise modalities.

Dr. Metcalf has most recently been involved with teaching Functional Anatomy at the Downtown Yoga School of Massage in Augusta. He carries this skill set into his regular chiropractic practice, as he believes it is vitally important to educate simply and clearly when it comes to why a patient is hurting.

When not in the office, Dr. Metcalf loves to cook (he’s obsessed with hot sauces) and, should you pass him while in the car, you will likely hear him blaring his beloved heavy metal music. Of note: A legend in his own living room, Dr. Metcalf plays guitar and bass and loves to collect guitar pedals (as well as the aforementioned hot sauces).
